Brandywine K-6 Co-ed Flag Rugby
Brandywine Youth Club (BYC) is excited to host its second season of co-ed Flag Rugby program for children in grades K-6 in the spring of 2024. The season will run from April through May with games played on Sundays.
Flag Rugby, aka 'Rookie Rugby', is the introductory game for rugby in America. Kids, parents, teachers, fans, referees, and coaches learn and compete in a simplified version of rugby played with flag belts. The rules and programs of Rookie Rugby tie together child development, healthy activity, fair play, fun, and safety. Rookie Rugby is the official start of the player pathway for USA Rugby and is used in PE classrooms, after-school programs, community programs, and rugby clubs throughout the USA.
Practice Schedule
Thursdays @ 6:00 PM at the GV Middle School
All teams and players practice at the same time at the same location. Practices typically begin with teams rotating around to different drills and end with a large group activity such as relay races.
For players who cannot make the main practices on Thursdays, BYC will determine a different day of the week that works best for the majority of those players and hold a smaller, less formal practice at the Francis Harvey Green field.
BYC Flag Rugby Board
If you are interested in joining the board for BYC Flag Rugby, please send an email to BYCRugby@gmail.com. For this new BYC program to succeed they will need your help and support.
Volunteer coaches Needed
As with any youth sport, volunteer coaches are needed to make the program a success. You can indicate that you would like to volunteer as a coach during registration or email: BYCRugby@gmail.com.
No prior rugby experience is needed to coach these age groups. The BYC Flag Rugby Director creates each practice itinerary which the coaches can use.
Summer Flag Rugby
BYC's goal is to run the spring 2024 season fully within the BYC community. This means your child we be put on a BYC team and each week play a different BYC team. If your child is enjoying the sport and wants to continue playing once the spring season is over, the rugby doesn't have to stop. In June and July, other local Flag Rugby clubs take turns hosting Sunday tournaments. If there is enough interest from within the BYC community, teams will be entered into some tournaments. Other local teams include programs from Downingtown, Media, Phoenixville, and Doylestown.
